An Exploration of Urban Living

Artist Statement:

The series Observation Works focuses on an abstracted idea of Chorography, the systematic description and mapping of regions or districts. By breaking down my current environment into smaller observations I am able to better analyze the idea of place.  Through collage and animation I reconfigure the imagery to explore urban issues of preservation, deconstruction, and renewal.

Observation Works: The Seattle Series

This print series is an exploration of my new home, Seattle. By documentind, analying and reconstructing the everyday imgery I am learning about my new city and making it my own.
"The First Stretch" from Observation Works: The Seattle Series, linocut print, ed. of 30, paper size 8x10 in.
The Animation Sketches are an extension of my printmaking series Observation Works. I am tearing apart the two dimensional form to expand on the issues that I discovered throughout the printing process. The cycles of cities has been an emerging concern in my work, that ongoing attempt to find balance and symmetry within urban living. There is a fine balance that exists between our natural environment and the man made environment we create within it. We construct our comfortable spaces with the illusion of control. We forget that we are always on the brink. There is always a rise and fall of human progress and a constant flux of nature versus what is man made.
Observation Works: The Detroit Edition

After six years of living and working in Seattle I have decided to turn my attention back to the city that first sparked my creative drive and interest, forming me into the artist that I am today, Detroit.
